Healthy Easter Chocolate: Cacao and Collagen Treat Recipes
Easter is traditionally a time of chocolate eggs and sugary treats. The result? Energy spikes, blood sugar crashes, and the familiar “why did I eat so much chocolate?” moment.
But chocolate itself isn’t the villain.
Cacao, the ingredient chocolate begins with, is a nutrient-dense food rich in polyphenols, magnesium, and naturally occurring mood-supporting compounds. The problem is what the confectionery industry usually does to it: dilute it with refined sugar, fillers, and ingredients you won’t find in your own kitchen.
If you want to celebrate Easter with a nutritional upgrade, without the questionable ingredients, you’ve come to the right place. Here at Planet Paleo, we’ve put together a few cacao-inspired recipes for you to enjoy without the guilt.
1. Easter morning: a chocolate protein smoothie that fuels the day
Instead of a sugar-loaded breakfast, start the day with something indulgent, quick, and truly nourishing.
Chocolate Banana Berry Breakfast Smoothie
Chocolate for breakfast? This creamy smoothie delivers fruit, cacao, and a nourishing collagen protein boost.
Serves 1
Ingredients
250 ml milk or milk alternative
1–2 tbsp chia seeds
1–2 tbsp nut butter (preferably without added oils, sugar, or preservatives)
1 serving (16 g) Bone Broth Protein Powder – Chocolate
1 ripe banana
Handful of raspberries
Optional: 1 pitted date for extra sweetness
Method
- Blend all ingredients until smooth.
- Add more milk if needed for a thinner consistency.
- For a thicker smoothie, use frozen banana.
2. Easter hunt: the alternative chocolate eggs
If you love chocolate but not refined sugar, these cacao and collagen eggs are the perfect healthy treat.
No-Bake Cacao Collagen Mini Eggs
Soft, fudgy cacao mini eggs packed with nuts, dates, and collagen for a naturally sweet chocolate treat.

300 g pitted dates
50 g hazelnuts
65 g cashews
20 g Cacao Collagen Powder
Pinch of sea salt
30 g nut or seed butter
1–2 tbsp unsweetened plant-based milk (hazelnut or cashew works well)
Optional: 1 tsp cacao powder for a deeper chocolate flavour
Method
- Blend dates, hazelnuts, and cashews until finely chopped.
- Add collagen, salt, nut butter, and plant milk and blend until the mixture begins to clump together.
- Roll into small egg shapes and place on a lined tray.
- Chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving.
- Dust with cacao powder (optional)
3. Sunday lunch afters: a dessert worth saving room for
Traditional sweets rely on refined sugar and processed ingredients. Gelatine opens the door to delicious homemade treats made with simple, clean ingredients. It provides natural collagen-forming amino acids and creates that classic dessert texture without additives.
Cacao and Coconut “Panna Cotta”
A silky dairy-free chocolate dessert that sets with collagen-rich gelatine.
Serves 4
Ingredients
400 ml full-fat coconut milk
3 tbsp raw cacao powder
1 vanilla pod, split
2 tbsp maple syrup (adjust to taste)
Pinch of sea salt
7 g Planet Paleo grass-fed gelatine (about 2 tsp)
Optional toppings: cacao nibs, fresh berries, toasted coconut flakes
Method
- Place the gelatine in a small bowl with 3 tbsp cold water. Leave for about 5 minutes until it thickens into a soft gel.
- Whisk the cacao with a little coconut milk first to avoid lumps.
- In a saucepan gently heat the coconut milk, cacao powder, vanilla pod, maple syrup, and sea salt. Whisk until smooth and fully combined. Heat until warm but do not boil.
- Remove from heat and whisk in the bloomed gelatine until completely dissolved.
- Divide the mixture between 4 small ramekins or glasses. Refrigerate for 3–4 hours until softly set.
- Top with cacao nibs or fresh berries. For a more traditional panna cotta presentation, briefly dip the ramekin base in warm water and invert onto a plate.
