We feature turmeric in a range of products from our Active collagen blend for joint support and sports recovery, to our Turmeric Latte and Golden Turmeric Bone Broth blends, so what is the history and benefits of this ancient root, and why is it a feature in our ranges?
Turmeric is thought to have a whole host of health benefits, and is one of the most researched plants with over 5000 peer reviewed studies looking at its health benefits and highlighting it as a useful preventative and disease-modifying agent. It belongs to the ginger family, and has been used for thousands of years across Asia, featuring strongly in traditional medicine with various cultures prizing it for its use for inflammatory disorders, skin health, digestive health and more.
Turmeric contains a range of curcuminoid compounds (which give it its distinctive orange colour) which have been shown to be strongly anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-fungal and more. It is also packed with essential oils like aromatic tumerones, which are also powerful anti-inflammatory compounds and have shown benefits for cognitive function.
This ancient root has long been used for its joint supporting benefits. It is a potent anti-inflammatory and several studies have shown it has an ability to manage pain and inflammation in cases of arthritis or joint pain. Chronic inflammation is strongly linked to many later life diseases from cardiovascular conditions to cognitive decline, so it’s important to protect against this throughout the life cycle.
Turmeric is also rich in antioxidants and has the ability to protect the body from oxidative damage caused by free radicals and support the body’s own production of powerful anti-oxidant enzymes like glutathione. The antioxidant properties can help fight oxidative stress which can cause degeneration of connective tissues like the joints, and premature ageing. Modern research has shown it to have many benefits for skin health, and it functions as a natural beauty all-rounder.
Turmeric is also an excellent liver supporting herb, it’s thought that turmeric can support phase 2 liver detoxification by increasing the activity of certain enzymes responsible for removing toxins from the blood. It is also helps to stimulate bile flow from the gallbladder into the digestive tract. As well as helping to digest our food, bile is the primary way in which our liver gets rid of fat-soluble toxins and waste from our blood.
