Dalgona Hot Chocolate with Bone Broth Powder

Dalgona Hot Chocolate with Bone Broth Powder

If you haven't made dalgona coffee during the lockdown period, then what have you been doing?! The dalgona craze has been sweeping the world this year, with new variations and creations appearing daily.

Our recipe for this dalgona hot chocolate comes from @meryshreds and is a great healthier take on dalgona coffee, featuring our chocolate Bone Broth for extra nourishment and a delicious mocha twist. Dalgona coffee, or whipped coffee seems to have originated in South Korea in the 1970s/80s and has reached the wider global population over the last few months, though there are other cultures that have their own variations including 'frappe' in Greece, and 'beaten coffee' in India.

Meaning 'honeycomb toffee' in Korean, it is very sweet and made with just 3 ingredients, so is super easy to whip up yourself at home, and makes a fun substitute while you can’t go out and get your fave coffee shop latte. Dalgona coffee is a thick, rich coffee, and usually mixed with milk and ice, though here we are pouring over our chocolate bone broth for those mocha vibes.

Usually, Dalgona is very sweet and has a high amount of sugar, but you can use sugar alternatives to lower the sugar and carbohydrate content if you want to. The traditional dalgona recipe calls for equal parts sugar, instant coffee and boiling water — usually 1-2 tablespoons of each, but here Mery has used erythritol to keep it sugar free, just bear in mind that when using sweeteners the mix doesn't stay as thick and fluffy for as long, so take that insta shot and enjoy.

Dalgona Hot Chocolate Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp Instant Coffee
  • 2 Tbsp Erythritol (sub for coconut sugar or other sugar if you aren't bothered about keeping it low carb)
  • 2 Tbsp Hot Water 8 Grams Planet Paleo Chocolate Bone Broth Powder
  • Cup of Water Dash of Almond Milk

Method
  1. Make the dalgona mousse by combining the coffee, erythritol and hot water and mixing well (We’ve found a powerful milk frother super useful for good consistency and less arm work!)
  2. Heat up the chocolate bone broth powder with water, constantly stirring.
  3. When the bone broth powder has dissolved. Pour into your serving cup, add a little almond milk and top with the dalgona mousse.
A delicious breakfast booster, pre/post-workout drink with over 7g of protein in the recipe, or mid-morning pick me up.
Best of all this dalgona hot chocolate has all the deliciousness, and all the sweetness of regular dalgona coffee without all the sugar, and with the extra nutrition from the bone broth powder too.
