Winter is in full swing, and some of you will have made the transition to warmer breakfast options at this time of year, however, we feel that there is always room for a smoothie even if the weather outside is frightful. Smoothies and smoothie bowls are a great way to cram in loads of nutrients- particularly important at this time of year to help keep our immune system strong and fight off any bugs going round. If you are craving a cooler breakfast, healthy dessert or snack- try our berry collagen smoothie recipe...
The thicker the smoothie the more optimal it is for bowl consumption. If you add frozen ingredients or avocado to a smoothie it will really tend to thicken the blend so you get to eat it out of a bowl with a spoon, which personally I always find more satisfying. Eating a smoothie in bowl form forces us to actually chew it which starts the digestive process, and let's face it we are all about the toppings anyway, and you can cram in as many as you like to finish off your bowl.
This smoothie makes a nutrient-dense way to start the day. Feel free to substitute any ingredients with what you have on hand. I like to make sure I have a base of berries for antioxidants and fibre, spinach to get those greens in, nut butter and seeds for healthy fats and protein and some collagen powder for more protein and nutritional value.
